Rowan O’Neill is a performance artist from Felinwynt, West Wales. Her current performative and video work investigates the substance which defines personal and collective memory and identity and the ritual that keeps it alive. Taking inspiration from the medieval Welsh poem Y Gododdin, a series of elegies to men slain in battle at Catraeth (modern day Catterick), the work A Grim Elegy investigates remembrance in relation to war. Her chief interest lies in the role of performance as a channel for transfigurative experience. The use of irony, traditional song and commonplace objects are key aspects of the work’s presentation.
