Original Simulations, Who is afraid of red, yellow and blue?, Maria Kling

Media art project that uses principles of quantum teleportation to transfer an artwork onto its own forgery. The work explores how originality shifts when images move between physical and digital forms. Fine art prints (on aluminium) are also available as part of the project.

Description

What does it take for an artwork to be considered an original? What does it imply? What happens when it is copied, digitised, forged or quantum teleported?
For these Original Simulations, mathematical simulations of quantum teleportation principles were used to “teleport” artworks onto their respective forgeries.
Quantum Teleportation destroys the “original” it is teleporting through the readout process and creates two new originals via entangled particles. The resulting pieces can either be explored with in the virtual gallery or appreciated in their physical materialisations.
Developed in collaboration with the Bristol Laboratory for Quantum Computing.

The large monochrome original painting was attacked with a knife and subsequently entirely overpainted in the restoration. Here the data of the “original” was quantum teleported onto the “restoration”. Different degrees of correction in the algorithm and degrading entanglement.
