Nils-Benedikt Fischer

 Artworks  CV

Nils Benedikt Fischer is a visual artist who combines sculpture, engineering and filmmaking. His work explores how individual experiences and memories converge to form a ‚personal history’ and lay the foundation for a process of worlding. By using self-developed projection machines which embody an essence of the medium they project, Fischer shifts the idea of the machine as a reproducible and potent tool to an individual vessel that represents states of fragility, doubt and the search for identity. Often incorporating organic materials such as plants, hair or fingernails and combining them with industrial components and sculptural materials, his works evade categorization and create an autonomous sphere that host the nucleus of a story.
Nils Benedikt Fischer was raised in Dessau and lives in Berlin.

basin v2 1Inhabited Basins (2024),  kinetic object.

The series Inhabited Basins (2024) unfolds an inner landscape and questions past decisions that have led to profound changes in the artist’s life. The works consist of basins filled with a cooling lubricant and platforms that set the basins in motion. Each basin moves at a certain speed and radius, creating its own temporal metric. The cooling liquids have varying degrees of turbidity, veiling pictorial arrangements that serve as markers for the biographical crossroads displayed on a map in the center of the installation. The map consists of various landscapes which refer to biographical contexts of the artist. Overlapping one another, these landscapes lose their geographical validity and become an imaginary place of memory. A basin in the center collects drops of cooling liquid and periodically pours them onto different sections of the map. The seasonal flood (a familiar experience during the artist’s childhood) activates different areas of memory and serves as the fertile source to replenish the adjacent basins.

carpet v2 2Flying Carpets (2024), kinetic obejct

Encountering the disturbed reflections of the past is also a central theme in the series Flying Carpets (2024), in which sheets of Kodak clear film move over polished aluminum plates. Each film contains the image of a space once inhabited by the artist. Through a process of encryption, the original content has been transformed into patterns resembling the geometry of carpets. Floating above the water-like aluminum surfaces, these carpets are kept in a permanent dance with their own mirror images.

Constellation 2 | projection machine | 2023
Constellation 2 consists of a projection machine, an archive of 360 degree portraits on 16mm film and found stones. Using a ring-shaped projection machine, a film circles its physical counterpart, a found stone placed in the center of the machine. The film passes through four projectors, which are aligned with the four sides of the stone. There, all the projections are brought together, creating the illusion of a flickering human head slowly turning on the surface of the stone.

Termninal, Courtesey Nils-Benedikt Fischer

Terminal | projection system | 2021
Like a tower that grows downwards, Terminal sections the Berlin soil and reveals its public underground transport system. Based on footage recorded in 2019 a fourfold projection shows the stations, tunnels and subterranean life going on and stages an underworld journey in twelve chapters. The centered projection machine incorporates the mirrored architectures of the subway system forming a telluric model, that combines all the technical and human agents into an inseparable process of movement. On top of the tower-like projection machine a rotating disc system is placed that contains a herbarium of common street plants. With each new chapter this overground garden readjusts itself and generates interpretations of the subterranean events.

Waterworks | Analog GIF Looper | 2022
Six analog GIFs circulate through eyeball-shaped loop projectors.Based on found footage and self-produced shots, the journey of a tear falling from a blind eye onto Earth is presented as
a recurring dream that the spectator witnesses by looking into the projectors."Water works" is a personal exploration of the state of artistic isolation and the freedom of dreaming. The path of tears is constantly re-dreamed in a performative way, depicting stages of search, creation, destruction and oblivion, finally becoming the departure point for its re-enactment.

Spain vs France, England vs Netherlands (Semi-finals)

On Frail Ground, Petja Ivanova and Mihai Grecu

The tenor and the undertone that the works of art have, could be described as the 'creation of an existential feeling'; a feeling of fragility, of imminent collapse. Rigid monuments of an ideology expressed in cement are attacked by forces of nature and show their last absurd steadfastness. Barren surfaces show fragile shining traces of human existence. Delicate derma structures are clothed and protected by a polysaccharide material inherent to fungi, arthropods, and molluscs, which leads to the creation of a new hybrid. Are we at the beginning of a changing materialism and repositioning in the Anthropocene?

Metaworse, The Grotesk Group, 2023

Six Channel Videoart Installation
metaworse' is not only a glimpse into the manifested misstep of a questionable wishful thinking and the urge of a group of narcissists to return to their boundless, beloved reality at any cost, but also a system critique that finds its tradition in an almost activist approach. grotesk.group presents the last minutes of the escape and a glimpse into the mind of a handful of questionable characters that we would prefer not to have in any of our realities.
'metaworse' is a work that presents itself in a dialogue of short film and five generative portraits

SevenThings About Late Technoculture

Dani Ploeger & Viv Lennert
2024

at re:publica 2024 and art claims impulse
Opening 28.05, 20:00, at Markgrafenstraße 86, 10969 Berlin

Exhibition: till 15.06.24, Wed-Sat 12:00 -18:00

Banner 1 7

In short, social media-optimised clips in the tradition of layered www-aesthetics, Viv Lennert and Dani Ploeger approach the gap between media studies and digital media content: Research as a controversial spectacle between real time and end time.

The end time of technoculture has arrived. Under ever-increasing pressure from states and market forces, cultural and academic institutions are obsessed with the digital dissemination of everything and anything, trying to reach as many people as possible with everything. Written academic publications are no longer of interest and all exhibitions must include multimedia gimmicks. Thorough research processes and lengthy intellectual arguments are avoided, and all content must be interdisciplinary, short and accessible to everyone.
In response, Dani Ploeger & Viv Lennert's ‘Seven Things About Late Technoculture’ consists of seven academic essays in the form of 15-25 second social media reels that integrate written works and performances by Dani Ploeger, video art by Viv Lennert and a copyright-free happy hardcore track. The video material was shot while the two artists spent a day in an electronics store in the centre of Munich.
